Aims and scope

BMC Neurology is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of the prevention, diagnosis and management of neurological disorders, as well as related molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and epidemiology.

Why publish your article in BMC Neurology?

  • We welcome research from across the entire field of neurology
  • With over 1.5 million article downloads in 2020, publishing with BMC Neurology ensures high visibility for your article
  • Transparency in the peer review process as reviewer reports are published with the article
  • Manuscripts are handled by an established and international editorial board
  • All article published by BMC Neurology are open access

Research we consider

As a BMC Series journal, BMC Neurology does not make editorial decisions on the basis of the interest of a study or its likely impact. Studies must be scientifically valid; for research articles, this includes a scientifically sound research question, the use of suitable methods and analysis, and following community-agreed standards relevant to the research field.

The journal welcomes manuscripts in the following broad areas of neurology research:

  • Cerebrovascular disease and stroke including ischemic stroke, spontaneous intracranial bleeding, sinus thrombosis, carotid or vertebral artery disease, cerebrovascular physiology, and neuroimaging related to cerebrovascular diseases
  • Child neurology including fetal MRI, autism, childhood epilepsy and beta thalassemia
  • Dementias including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's Disease, frontotemporal dementias, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, mild cognitive impairment and basic aspects of neurodegenerative diseases and prion diseases
  • Demyelinating diseases including multiple sclerosis, neuroimmunology, systemic lupus, vasculitis, lymphoma, and myelitis
  • Epilepsy and seizures
  • Movement disorders including Parkinson's Disease, transcranial magnetic stimulation, spasticity, dyskinesia, and spinal cord injury
  • Neuro-oncology and clinical diagnosis, pathology and management of neurological tumours
  • Neurocritical care and life-threatening disease or disorder of the central or peripheral nervous systems, including neurotrauma, infections, encephalophathies
  • Neurogenetics including clinical genetics, molecular mechanisms, genetic testing of neurological disorders, mutation screenings, genetics of complex diseases and pharmacogenetics
  • Neuromuscular disorders and peripheral neurology including myasthenia gravis, myopathies, neuropathies and all other inflammatory, metabolic and genetic disorders affecting skeletal muscle, peripheral nerve or neuromuscular transmission
  • Neurorehabilitation and management of neurological disorders
  • Pain including migraine, headaches, analgesia and pain management

Alternative journals?

Not sure your manuscript is in scope for BMC Neurology? Please consider other journals in the BMC Series or try the Springer Nature Journal Suggester

If your study is investigating neurological disorders using in vitro or animal models, consider BMC Neuroscience.

If your study is investigating brain activity or brain imaging in psychiatric disorders, consider BMC Psychiatry.
